About Us

Derek Young and Gabriela Domicelj became homestay hosts accidentally. After living in their nine-acre property in the Blue Mountains, Australia, for two years, they moved to Singapore for work. They were reluctant to sell the property, so they asked friends to manage short-term rentals with the view to covering the property’s costs. After a couple of years, they saw an opportunity to formalize the business and to drive both excellence and profit. Today, they are passionate supporters of the sharing economy, the growing Airbnb industry and delivering the ‘perfect’ guest experience.

After five years of building their homeshare business, they have learned the hard way what works and what doesn’t, and what first-time homeshare hosts and those seeking to grow their business need to know. When they first started managing their homeshare, they looked for practical “how to” information and were surprised to find very little assistance. This book contains what they had hoped to find when they first started their journey to becoming homeshare hosts.

Derek has worked in wealth management for 30 years, providing fee-based financial advice to private clients, including as CEO of ipac Asia in Hong Kong. He left the corporate world to pursue his own businesses - a wealth management company in Australia and consulting in Singapore. Gabriela has 25 years’ experience in management consulting (with Accenture, Towers Watson and AON) and 5 years’ experience in film production, focusing on documentaries which tell the stories of private individuals and companies.

Derek and Gabriela have visited more than 35 countries as both business and leisure travelers, staying in back-packer accommodation as well as five-star hotels. They have both lived on four continents.

They own two homeshare properties: an apartment in Sydney and Dantosa Blue Mountains Retreat.
